I Am A: Neutral Good Human Ranger/Sorcerer (3rd/2nd Level)

Ability Scores:

Strength-12

Dexterity-13

Constitution-16

Intelligence-15

Wisdom-14

Charisma-17

Alignment:
Neutral Good A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them. Neutral good is the best alignment you can be because it means doing what is good without bias for or against order. However, neutral good can be a dangerous alignment because because it advances mediocrity by limiting the actions of the truly capable.

Race:
Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.

Primary Class:
Rangers are skilled stalkers and hunters who make their home in the woods. Their martial skill is nearly the equal of the fighter, but they lack the latter's dedication to the craft of fighting. Instead, the ranger focuses his skills and training on a specific enemy a type of creature he bears a vengeful grudge against and hunts above all others. Rangers often accept the role of protector, aiding those who live in or travel through the woods. His skills allow him to move quietly and stick to the shadows, especially in natural settings, and he also has special knowledge of certain types of creatures. Finally, an experienced ranger has such a tie to nature that he can actually draw on natural power to cast divine spells, much as a druid does, and like a druid he is often accompanied by animal companions. A ranger's Wisdom score should be high, as this determines the maximum spell level that he can cast.

Secondary Class:
Sorcerers are arcane spellcasters who manipulate magic energy with imagination and talent rather than studious discipline. They have no books, no mentors, no theories just raw power that they direct at will. Sorcerers know fewer spells than wizards do and acquire them more slowly, but they can cast individual spells more often and have no need to prepare their incantations ahead of time. Also unlike wizards, sorcerers cannot specialize in a school of magic. Since sorcerers gain their powers without undergoing the years of rigorous study that wizards go through, they have more time to learn fighting skills and are proficient with simple weapons. Charisma is very important for sorcerers; the higher their value in this ability, the higher the spell level they can cast.

I am so backlogged with essays right now that it's not even funny. I'm fantasizing about running D&D mock combats to decide on student's grades, ie: If this 2nd Level Fighter can kill three kobolds in two rounds, you get a B+!

Or something.

A sort of pseudo-secret to some: I've been working on getting a full-time position at one of the schools I'm teaching at right now. This has involved greasing wheels and buttering up faculty members. I really, really like this school, so I've been hoping for it to work out. It's less a money thing as much as it's about getting benefits and a modicum of respect.

Today I found out that the chair of the search committee for the position I want is someone I don't know. This sucks, as I've been working the director of my program pretty hard and she has been pulling for me, and now I understand I'm suddenly at the mercy of someone that hasn't been swayed by my manly charms. Seriously, this other woman doesn't know me at all. And I do have some disadvantages to my application: My degree is an MFA, etc.

The director is still going to be on the committee, but she's no longer the search chair. This isn't a great thing for me, but it's out of my control.

There's been a lot of hinting that even if I don't get the lecturer slot that the director may bump me to instructor (a three-year contract vs. a one-year contract). In all honesty, I don't care. Just give me benefits and an office. But I'm worried that even that won't come through. I mean, words and promises are generally utter shit.

I worry a lot. I think worrying is almost what I do best (or worst?).

This weekend rocked though, and I spent a lot of the drive back thinking about my motivations and priorities. I feel good about that. More later.

Man, more school shootings in academia. It definitely hits close to home for me, seeing as I teach college for my bread and butter.

First, it makes me wonder what I would do if a student-turned-gunman entered my classroom. Would I cower? Would I try to jam the door with something? Would I attempt to save my students?

Second, I'm really mad about all this shit happening in a "gun-free zone." It's just not fair for all the disarmed folk in the area. Gun-free zones hurt innocent people. They don't work.

I wish they'd just let teachers like me carry concealed in school. I can only imagine the surprise (and dismay) of a school-shooter entering a classroom, expecting a docile group of victims, and instead getting the business end of my CZ-75B.

Bleh. Well, if I really wanted to do anything about the "gun-free" policy at my school I would have to:

A) Try to start a group for CCW in schools, which would probably amount to career suicide for me. My gun politics are enough to ruin me in an academic setting, and if you disagree, then you have no idea what you're talking about.

B) Disregard the rule and carry concealed anyways. When or if the shit hit the fan and I shot some rampaging student, I would then have to rely on the outcry of support from surviving teachers, students, and concerned parents. To some I'd be a hero. I'd still go to PMITA, though.

Whatever. I'm no law breaker; I guess I'll just have to get in good physical shape so I can run in very defined zig-zags when the shooting starts.

Generally I dislike these, but, why not? (pilfered from [info]omgdontlook)

Leave a comment and I will:

1. Tell you why I friended you.
2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, a word etc.
3. Tell you something I like about you.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
7. In return, you must post this in your LJ. (Let's face it; this is optional.)

George MacDonald Fraser, my favorite writer of all time, died. The Flashman series didn't just make me want to be a writer, it sort of saved my life. I know that sounds dramatic, but I could explain it to you. But I don't feel like it right now.

For this moment, here's a toast to GMF!

My second best-friend in the world had a stroke last week. It's kind of a sobering dose of reality. To all the people I care about, whoever you are, know that you're important to me.

And I hate the fucking who/whom grammar rules. Direct objects are dumb. But here is a good site explaining it.

I found out that my favorite Emerson College professor, Rev. John Coffee, retired recently. I don't think I've based my teaching on him (I can't replicate his surly wisdom or his awesome oldness), but he did influence my love of history.

History would literally come alive when this man spoke; he would affect a high-pitched, nasally tone for Isabella the She-Wolf, or a deep, booming baritone as he acted out Lord Cardigan's part in the Charge of the Light Brigade. Pretty awesome. In actuality, he may have influenced my DMing style more than anything else.

One interesting note that the above bio is missing is that Stephen King met Rev. Coffee and liked him so much that he used his name (a bastardization of it) in The Green Mile.

I love my Conan campaign. It's been rad thus far. My players are awesome and they've definitely gotten into the theme of the game --- wearing a loin cloth while killing people. Seriously, they're the type of characters you would see in a Conan story: they stomp around, make enemies, make trouble, and generally live on a large stage. That's how Conan should be played.

Next session is going to be awesome!

Dear Livejournal,

All right, it's true, I've been cheating on you with Facebook. It's not that my life hasn't been interesting enough right now to post an update, it's just that Facebook provides me with instant gratification and long, hard hours of intimate discourse, while you make me work for it with long posts and no Zombie applications.

I promise I'll give you an update soon, but you're going to have to get used to our polyamorous lifestyle.

Love,

Jeff

So yesterday was my birthday. I spent it how I wanted to, watching bad horror movies and eating cake. It was nice. My little sister sent me an awesome shirt that I will post pictures of later, and I got phone calls from my friends. All in all, a great day.
